The Charlotte Hornets have made a historic decision official by announcing the retirement of Dell Curry’s number 30 jersey. The ceremony will take place on March 19 during the game against the Orlando Magic at the Spectrum Center. A well-deserved recognition for one of the iconic figures of the North Carolina franchise.

Dell Curry joins Bobby Phills (number 13) and Bill Russell (number 6) as the only players to have their jerseys retired in Hornets history. An honor that rewards an exceptional career and an unbreakable bond with the organization.

A Legacy Inseparable from Hornets History

Beyond his status as father of Stephen Curry and Seth Curry, Dell Curry forged his own legend in Charlotte. During his 10 seasons in the teal jersey (1988-1998), he established records that still stand today. With 701 games played, he holds the franchise record for most games in Hornets history.

His 9,839 points make him the second-leading scorer in Hornets history, behind only Kemba Walker. A deadly three-point shooter with 40.2% accuracy over his career, Dell Curry was awarded the Sixth Man of the Year title in 1994, testament to his decisive impact off the bench.

Loyalty Rewarded by New Owners

Since the end of his playing career, Dell Curry has never left the Hornets organization. A television commentator for 17 seasons and team ambassador, he now has 27 years of collaboration with the franchise. This exceptional longevity weighed heavily in the decision by new owners Rick Schnall and Gabe Plotkin.

After purchasing the team from Michael Jordan in 2023, the leadership wants to reconnect the franchise with its history and legends. This initiative is part of a broader modernization effort, including the construction of a new state-of-the-art training facility scheduled for spring 2027.

The announcement video, orchestrated by commentator Eric Collins, particularly moved Dell Curry, surprised by this recognition. A symbolic moment that illustrates the mutual attachment between the former shooter and his beloved franchise.
