« I’ve reached a point in my career where I want to win »: Nikola Mirotic discusses his signing with Monaco

After years of rumors, Nikola Mirotic (2.08m, 34 years old) is officially an AS Monaco player. The former EuroLeague MVP was presented to the media ahead of the LNB Supercoupe – an opportunity for him to discuss his choice to join the Principality at age 34.

European champion with Spain in 2015, the EuroLeague MVP of the 2021-22 season has never won the continent’s biggest club competition, which is what he aims to compete for with the Roca Team. « I chose this team because I saw it was an ambitious team with big goals, » he smiles. « It’s a team that really wants to create something special. When you see that kind of thing, you want to be part of it. I’ve reached a point in my career, at 34, where I want to win. I really want to win, and that’s why I came. »
After a strong season in Milan, Mirotic gives himself another chance to lift the EuroLeague trophy with the recent competition finalist. While ASM fell just short, the Spanish-Montenegrin envisions helping the team take the next step. « I hope to be the missing piece Monaco needed to achieve its goals. I like pressure. »

To overcome it and reach these high goals, Mirotic can count on another high-caliber player: Mike James, who returned a week ago. With his former Pelicans (NBA) teammate, he shares the same desire to finally win EuroLeague after collecting individual honors. « On the team, we have two EuroLeague MVPs. But we’re missing the most important thing: the title. That’s why I came. If we work in the same direction, trust each other and stay humble, I believe we can do something great. »
The « hunt » for trophies for Mirotic, James and the others begins this Saturday, September 20, during the LNB SuperCoupe. While he acknowledges it will still take « a little time » before seeing the full potential of the Monegasque roster, the observed « good chemistry » could already wreak havoc.
