In an NBA where every tweet is closely scrutinized, Guerschon Yabusele just fueled trade rumors with a cryptic message. The French forward for the New York Knicks posted on X: « Whatever happens tomorrow (Friday), I’m extremely blessed to be in the position that I am today. Minor setback for major comeback that’s my favorite. Love y’all #777 ».

The timing of this post is not coincidental. Two weeks before the trade deadline set for February 5, the Knicks are actively working to improve a struggling roster. According to the New York Post, talks are already underway with several teams regarding a potential trade of the French national team captain.

A complicated situation in New York for the former 76er

Arriving as a free agent last summer after a successful season in Philadelphia (11 points per game average), Yabusele is struggling to find his place in Mike Brown’s rotation. In 37 appearances this season, the Frenchman is averaging only 2.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game, statistics well below his previous performances.

« I don’t want to lie to you, it’s very difficult, I’m a competitor above all, this is not a situation I thought I’d be in when I arrived here », Yabusele admitted in December in the pages of L’Équipe. The 30-year-old forward, who signed for two years and $12 million, now seems to have become an expendable piece in the Knicks’ plans.

His contract could serve as trade currency in a more ambitious deal, especially since New York is also exploring the possibility of trading Karl-Anthony Towns. A change of scenery could allow Yabusele, hero of the Paris 2024 Olympics, to regain the level that convinced the 76ers to sign him last season. The coming days will be decisive for the Frenchman’s future in the NBA.
