As trade rumors multiply around Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of the February 5th deadline, the Greek superstar has set the record straight. In an interview with The Athletic after the Milwaukee Bucks‘ loss to the Golden State Warriors (120-113), the two-time MVP firmly denied any intention of leaving his team.
« There will never be a chance, and there will never be a moment where I come out and say ‘I want a trade’, » Antetokounmpo declared. « It’s not… in… my… nature. OK? » This statement contrasts with the constant speculation surrounding his future in Milwaukee, as the Bucks currently sit in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 16 wins and 21 losses.
The 31-year-old player emphasized his investment in the team, despite this season’s disappointing performances. « I’m invested in this team. I want to turn this team around. I want to play good basketball, » he affirmed. Antetokounmpo also highlighted that the Bucks were coming off a 4-2 record in their last 6 games, showing signs of improvement.
Coach Doc Rivers confirmed his star’s commitment: « If you were around the team every day, and you saw these reports, you’d laugh. He has given no indication (that he wanted to leave). Giannis loves being in Milwaukee. He loves playing for this team. »
Despite injuries that have caused him to miss 14 out of 37 games this season, Antetokounmpo maintains exceptional statistics with 29.5 points (64.5% shooting), 10.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game. These performances place him among the serious MVP candidates, alongside Nikola Jokić.
The Greek concluded by explaining his philosophy of winning basketball: « Winning doesn’t always look like what you want it to look like. Sometimes, one day, I need to have 20 rebounds, eight assists, 12 points. But winning doesn’t always look the same. » A mentality that could be the key to turning around the Bucks‘ season and definitively silence the departure rumors.
