The Phoenix Suns are going through a difficult period with injuries to their two main stars. Dillon Brooks suffered a left hand fracture during the double-overtime victory against Orlando Magic on Saturday, according to ESPN. The 30-year-old forward will be sidelined for an as-yet undetermined duration.
An exceptional season interrupted by injury
Brooks was having his best career season with averages of 21.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game, shooting 44.1% from the field. Arriving this season in Phoenix in the trade that sent Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, the former Memphis Grizzlies player had become a key element of the Suns’ offense.
The injury occurred after just seven minutes of play against the Magic, where Brooks had compiled 5 points and 3 rebounds before leaving the game permanently. According to reports, the injury occurred on a contested shot involving contact with Wendell Carter Jr. of the Magic.
Doctors will meet on Sunday to determine a precise return timeline, but no details have been released regarding the exact part of the hand affected or the need for surgery.
Phoenix weakened by accumulation of absences
This Brooks injury adds to Devin Booker’s physical problems, who will miss at least a week due to a right hip strain suffered Thursday against San Antonio. The All-Star guard, who is averaging 24.7 points and 6.1 assists per game this season, had already missed seven consecutive games earlier in the season with a right ankle sprain.
The Suns will also have to do without Jordan Goodwin, injured in the calf on Saturday and who will undergo an MRI on Sunday according to coach Jordan Ott. This accumulation of injuries comes at the worst time for Phoenix, currently 7th in the West with a record of 33 wins and 24 losses.
The team will need to rely more heavily on Jalen Green, who scored the game-winning shot in double overtime against Orlando, to maintain their playoff ambitions in the coming weeks.
