Darius McGhee (5’9″, 26 years old) is the first American player officially signed by JL Bourg for the 2025-2026 season. The Ain club has bet on this 5’9″ scoring point guard, who had a convincing season with Bonn in the German Bundesliga (BBL) and Champions League (BCL). He numerically replaces Hugo Benitez, who left the club as announced this Saturday, June 14.

An explosive offensive profile to revitalize JL

After several departure announcements, including point guard Hugo Benitez, JL Bourg needed to make a strong move to lay the foundation for its new roster. They did so this Saturday by announcing the arrival of Darius McGhee, an electric guard with deadly shooting skills, from Telekom Baskets Bonn.

The American averaged 15 points and 4.2 assists in the German league (BBL), with impressive performances: 30 points against Alba Berlin, 40 against Oldenburg, and 44 against Chemnitz. In European competition (BCL), he shined with 16.1 points per game and a peak of 37 points against Andorra.

A historic NCAA shooter

At Liberty University, Darius McGhee made NCAA history. A three-time ASUN conference MVP, he finished his college career with over 500 made three-pointers and shares a record with… Stephen Curry, making 162 long-range shots in a single season.

Undrafted in 2023 despite a good showing at Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, he briefly signed with the Indiana Pacers before joining their G-League team, the Mad Ants. It was with Bonn that he truly emerged in Europe, proving himself both as a scorer and playmaker.

François Lamy’s statement

In the club’s press release, General Manager François Lamy welcomed this arrival:

« Darius has a unique long-range shooting characteristic. […] His size is limiting in a way, but if he were taller and stronger, he’d be in the NBA. It’s up to us to find ways not to be penalized by this aspect and focus on his qualities. »

JL Bourg will need to build around him, complementing profiles like Assemian Moulare and Antony Labanca, to find a winning dynamic again.
