Cam Thomas has found a new home. The 24-year-old guard has signed with the Milwaukee Bucks after being released by the Brooklyn Nets just after the trade deadline. An arrival that could provide the offensive punch needed for a Milwaukee team struggling this season.

Thomas had spent his entire professional career in Brooklyn since being selected 27th overall in the 2021 draft out of LSU. Despite his undeniable scoring talent, the Nets decided to part ways with him after failed trade negotiations before the deadline.

A prolific scorer to support Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Chesapeake native brings impressive offensive statistics with an average of 21.4 points per game over the past three seasons. This season, he was averaging 15.6 points, 3.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 24 games with Brooklyn, despite a hamstring injury that kept him off the court for 20 games.

« Super excited, ready to really help and contribute to another team, » Thomas told ESPN Andscape after being waived. « My next team is getting elite scoring and good playmaking. »

The 6’3″ guard explained his choice: « I chose Milwaukee because they really wanted me and they told me they’ve been interested in me for several years already. So it’s good to see this opportunity come to fruition. »

A risky but calculated bet for the Bucks

Thomas had accepted a qualifying offer of $5.9 million last summer after failing to secure an extension with Brooklyn. He will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, which represents both an opportunity and a risk for Milwaukee.

Despite his undeniable offensive qualities, questions remain about his defensive abilities and his tendency to dominate the ball. With a record of 21-29, the Bucks are 3 wins behind Charlotte for the last qualifying spot in the play-in tournament.

Thomas’s arrival continues the successful gamble with Kevin Porter Jr. and could provide the necessary depth to a roster that still relies on Giannis Antetokounmpo, currently injured. For Thomas, these last three months of the regular season represent a crucial showcase before his first true free agency period.
