Vassilis Spanoulis has officially parted ways with AS Monaco. After several days of uncertainty surrounding his future, the Roca Team announced Wednesday that both sides had agreed to separate “by mutual agreement,” effective immediately. The Greek coach leaves behind an important chapter in the recent history of the Monaco club.

A separation made official by Monaco

In a statement published on Wednesday, AS Monaco Basket confirmed the end of its collaboration with Vassilis Spanoulis.

« AS Monaco Basket and Vassilis Spanoulis have agreed by mutual consent to part ways, effective immediately. The club thanks Spanoulis for the passion, energy and dedication he has shown within the organization. »

The Monaco club also wanted to acknowledge the commitment of the Greek coach and the mark he leaves on the Roca Team. « His commitment to the team and the club’s values will remain etched in Monaco’s history. »

AS Monaco assures it remains « united and focused » for the end of the season, as several important challenges lie ahead.

Oleksiy Yefimov pays tribute to Spanoulis

AS Monaco’s executive director, Oleksiy Yefimov, also spoke to thank the Greek coach, despite tensions between the two men being palpable for many months.

« When we first met in Thessaloniki and shook hands, I had the feeling that we were not just welcoming a coach, but a true leader. Time has proven me right. »

He also recalled the sporting achievements obtained under his leadership.

« Vassilis led Monaco to its first historic EuroLeague final in Abu Dhabi. He helped the club win its very first French SuperCup and secure the Leaders Cup for the first time in eight years. »

Before adding:

« I would have liked us to accomplish even more together, but sometimes circumstances force you to make difficult and painful decisions. »

Spanoulis: a EuroLeague final and two trophies

Arriving on Monaco’s bench in November 2024 to replace Saša Obradović — who has since successfully bounced back at Red Star Belgrade — Vassilis Spanoulis quickly made his mark in the club’s history.

In his first season, he guided the Roca Team to the first EuroLeague final in franchise history in 2025, although the campaign ended without a trophy after defeats in the Betclic ELITE Finals, the Leaders Cup final and the French Cup semifinal. This season, however, Monaco managed to secure two national titles: the SuperCup at the start of the campaign and the Leaders Cup in February.

In a message relayed by his agent Miško Ražnatović, the Greek coach reflected on his time in the Principality.

« My time in Monaco will always remain in my memory. The first trophy I won as a coach and my first EuroLeague final are achievements I will never forget. I wish the club much success for the rest of the season. »

Sergii Gladyr on the bench for the end of the season

For the remainder of the season, Sergii Gladyr is expected to continue as head coach.

The former Roca Team player has already been in charge for the past two games. Monaco first defeated Cholet in Betclic ELITE (89–79), then followed it up with an 87–83 win at Nanterre on Tuesday night to secure a spot in the French Cup final.

The Roca Team will face Le Mans on April 25 at Bercy, looking to add another trophy to its collection this season.
