Tyrese Maxey to miss 3 weeks due to tendon injury

The Philadelphia 76ers have just received terrible news regarding their star Tyrese Maxey. The All-Star guard is suffering from a tendon injury to his right pinkie finger and will be out for at least three weeks, according to information reported by Shams Charania of ESPN.
The injury occurred Saturday during the loss to the Atlanta Hawks (126-116), when Maxey collided with his teammate Adem Bona with 16 seconds remaining in the game. The player immediately grabbed his right hand before heading to the locker room.
Additional tests reveal severity of injury
Initially, X-rays and MRI revealed no fracture, but additional imaging and consultations with several hand specialists confirmed the tendon injury. This same pinkie finger injury had already affected Maxey last season.
Maxey’s absence represents a major blow for the 76ers, who currently occupy eighth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 34 wins and 30 losses. The team had only played three games without him this season (1 win, 2 losses), while posting a 33-28 record with his presence.

Significant impact on playoff ambitions
Maxey is having his best career season with averages of 29 points, 6.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2 steals per game, while playing 38.3 minutes per game – the highest total in the NBA. He is the only player in the league to record more than 100 steals and 50 blocks this season.
This injury comes at the worst time for Philadelphia, already without Joel Embiid (oblique injury) and Paul George (25-game suspension for violation of NBA’s anti-drug policy). The team is going through a difficult period with four losses in the last five games. Cameron Payne will fill in during Maxey’s absence.

With only 1.5 games behind Orlando Magic (sixth place) but also just one game ahead of Atlanta Hawks (ninth), the 76ers see their chances of avoiding the play-in tournament seriously complicated. This absence of at least three weeks could also jeopardize Maxey’s chances of being selected to an All-NBA team, requiring a minimum of 65 games played – he currently needs four more.
