Zac Seljaas in shooting slump with ASVEL: « He’s a rookie in EuroLeague, he’s hitting the wall »

After a complete NCAA career with the Brigham Young (BYU) Cougars, Zac Seljaas (6’7″, 28 years old) honed his skills in Europe at Prievidza, Vera, Tübingen and then Würzburg, before joining ASVEL. A profile identified as a reliable shooter, but one that is now confronting the harsh reality of the very highest level of European basketball.
A promising start quickly halted
Yet everything had started well. In his first three EuroLeague games, Seljaas displayed impressive accuracy with 11 three-pointers made on 22 attempts. The highlight of this start: October 3rd against Baskonia, with a blazing 5/6 from three-point range in a 102-95 victory.
Since then, the momentum has completely reversed. The American has not exceeded 33% shooting from beyond the arc since December 23rd. Over his last nine games across all competitions, he’s posting a worrying 3/32 from three-point range. A lack of success that is also reflected in scoring: Seljaas has not exceeded the 10-point mark since December 21st in French championship play and since November 14th on the European stage.
Difficult adjustment to EuroLeague level
Facing this difficult period, the player remains clear-headed and professional. In the pages of Le Progrès, he recently explained:
« It’s a bit more difficult because I’m scouted much more and therefore I have fewer easy and open shots. You have to adapt and this is the time for me to improve. »
Comments that reflect the awareness of a EuroLeague rookie confronted with better-prepared defenses and constant demands.
Full support from Pierric Poupet
His coach Pierric Poupet doesn’t hide his support for the American forward. Also in the pages of Le Progrès, the Villeurbanne coach delivered a straightforward analysis:
« Zac is a great guy. He’s really team-oriented and he’s very coachable. He has the human characteristics of the very highest level. Now, he needs to get through this little crisis period and use it to become mentally stronger and a better player. Am I worried? No. I’m like him, unsatisfied. The most unhappy person is probably him. […] He’s a rookie in EuroLeague, he’s hitting the wall. It’s a bit long, but everyone hits it in EuroLeague! »
A message that emphasizes the importance of not reducing a player’s impact to just his shooting accuracy.
A contrasting season statistically
On the statistical front, Zac Seljaas remains an important contributor. In Betclic ELITE, he averages 8.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.7 steals in 21 minutes over 15 games. His best game remains the one on October 5th against Saint-Quentin, with 15 points and 7 rebounds for 23 efficiency rating (81-76 victory). Again early in the season.

In EuroLeague, he averages 7.8 points, 3 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 23 minutes over 21 games, making him ASVEL’s third-best scorer on the European stage. His breakout performance against Baskonia (23 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists for 26 efficiency rating in 23 minutes) remains, for now, his individual peak.
Collectively, ASVEL is currently 4th in Betclic ELITE with a record of 11 wins and 5 losses (at the same level as Strasbourg, fifth place), but sits in 19th place in EuroLeague (6 wins, 17 losses).

A major test against FC Barcelona
The next European matchup could serve as a catalyst. This Friday, January 23rd, ASVEL will travel to face FC Barcelona in EuroLeague. A prestigious fixture, and perhaps the opportunity for Zac Seljaas to regain confidence and remind everyone why he was recruited.
Because beyond the numbers, the question is not so much whether his shooting touch will return, but when.
