Victor Wembanyama leads Spurs to third straight victory against the Nets

The San Antonio Spurs secured their third victory in as many games this season by defeating the Brooklyn Nets 118-107 on Sunday night at home. This performance marks a positive turning point for the Texas franchise, which hadn’t had such a start in six years.
Victor Wembanyama was once again the spearhead of his team with another impressive stat line, despite lower shooting efficiency: 31 points on 9/21 shooting, 14 rebounds, 3 steals and 6 blocks. The French giant had a difficult start, ending the first quarter with only 3 points from free throws, facing the Nets’ aggressive defense. However, he elevated his game before halftime, going to the locker room with 18 points, including a final sequence with a double block followed by a long-range 3-pointer in transition.

Domination turns into a scare
After leading by 26 points at halftime (69-48), the Spurs experienced a real scare in the second half. Mitch Johnson’s team saw their lead gradually melt away against a brilliant Cam Thomas, who finished with 40 points. The Nets, who were shooting only 19% from 3-point range in the first half, improved to 50% in the second half to come within one possession early in the fourth quarter.
Rookie Dylan Harper particularly stood out off the bench with 20 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals. Keldon Johnson also contributed with 19 points, helping the Spurs have six players with more than 7 points at halftime.
A controlled finish to preserve the perfect record
Despite Brooklyn’s spectacular comeback led by a red-hot Cam Thomas, the Spurs maintained their composure in crunch time. Wembanyama, initially struggling with some crucial turnovers, proved decisive in the final moments with an important 3-pointer (103-97) and a game-sealing alley-oop.

The Texas team closed the game on a 10-0 run, perfectly illustrating their ability to step up in crucial moments. This victory allows the Spurs to continue their excellent season start, having not begun with two consecutive wins in five years.
For the Nets, despite Thomas’s exceptional performance and rookie Russian Egor Demin’s efforts, the youngest team in the league (23.3 years average age) suffers their third loss in as many outings, showing the adaptation challenges inherent to their youth. Nolan Traoré did not play.
