Uros Nikolic arrested: EuroLeague referee suspected of belonging to criminal gang

The European basketball world has been rocked by a major criminal case. Uros Nikolic, a respected Euroleague referee, has been arrested by Serbian authorities for alleged membership in a criminal gang operating in the country.
Serious accusations and troubling evidence
According to Serbian national television RTS, the referee may have connections to an organization called Vracarci. The accusations are particularly serious, as Nikolic is believed to be more than just a passive member of this criminal organization.
« He (Nikolic) is suspected of being the financial backer of the Vracar clan’s activities, » stated Serbian Police Minister Ivica Dacic. This statement suggests an active and central role of the referee in financing the gang’s illegal activities.
The search conducted at Nikolic’s residence in Serbia revealed the extent of his alleged activities. Law enforcement discovered 250,000 euros in cash, as well as various gold bars and jewelry, including luxury watches. These findings strengthen suspicions about his financial involvement in criminal activities.
A prestigious career tarnished by scandal
Uros Nikolic had until now maintained a solid reputation in European refereeing. He officiated two EuroLeague Final Fours during his distinguished career, demonstrating his level of expertise and the trust placed in him by governing bodies.
As recently as early October, he was officiating the Real Madrid – Olympiakos match, showing he was still considered a top-tier referee. This arrest now raises numerous questions about the integrity of the competitions he officiated and the background checking procedures for officials.
This case is likely to have significant repercussions on the Euroleague and could lead to enhanced screening of referees working in high-level European competitions.
