A historic evening unfolded Thursday night in Philadelphia, where Tyrese Maxey wrote a new page in franchise history. The All-Star guard surpassed Allen Iverson in the Sixers’ all-time 3-pointers made ranking, while leading his team to a crucial 124-117 victory against the Miami Heat.

An exceptional first quarter to make history

Maxey wasted no time establishing this historic record. Entering the game with 882 career 3-pointers, three shy of Iverson, he broke the record with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter. The 25-year-old guard had an exceptional first quarter, scoring 20 points and making all five of his 3-point attempts – a personal record for a single period.

« Tyrese Maxey is now the franchise leader in 3-pointers made », the Sixers celebrated on their social media. With now 887 three-pointers in six and a half seasons, Maxey surpasses Iverson’s 885, who had played ten complete seasons and portions of two others with Philadelphia.

A victory secured in crunch time

Despite a 16-point lead at halftime (73-57), the Sixers had to battle until the end. Bam Adebayo (29 points, 14 rebounds) and Tyler Herro (25 points) led the Heat’s second-half comeback, even briefly taking the lead in the fourth quarter.

Ultimately, a 7-0 run in the final two minutes made the difference. Maxey initiated this decisive run with two free throws, before serving Kelly Oubre Jr. for a crucial 3-pointer. Joel Embiid, despite painful ribs, hit the dagger 3-pointer to seal the victory with 29.2 seconds remaining.

Maxey finished the game with 28 points (9/26 shooting, 5/12 from 3-point range), 11 assists, 5 steals and 4 rebounds. Embiid added 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Oubre Jr. contributed 21 points. This third consecutive victory improves the Sixers’ record to 33-26 and solidifies their sixth place in the East.

This performance confirms Maxey’s excellent season, as he averages 29.1 points, 6.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds with 37.5% shooting from 3-point range, placing him fifth in the NBA scoring rankings.
