A record trade to save administrative time
Finalized on July 6 with the start of the new NBA year, this trade originated from a desire for administrative simplification. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, « teams are trying to save time on trade calls. Instead of having to make several different calls, they now only have one call to make. »
The Houston Rockets get Kevin Durant and Clint Capela, who returns to the team where he started his career. The Phoenix Suns receive Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, 10th draft pick Khaman Maluach, along with rookies Rasheer Fleming, Koby Brea, Daeqwon Plowden and a second-round pick.
The five other franchises involved share the remaining assets: the Brooklyn Nets receive two second-round picks, the Golden State Warriors get Alex Toohey and Jahmai Mashack, the Atlanta Hawks receive David Roddy and cash, the Los Angeles Lakers get Adou Thiero, while the Minnesota Timberwolves obtain Rocco Zikarsky, two second-round picks and cash.
Houston goes all-in on Durant for 2025-2026
At 36, Kevin Durant brings an exceptional resume to Houston with his 2014 MVP title, fifteen All-Star selections and two NBA championships won with Golden State. Rockets coach Ime Udoka expressed enthusiasm: « His skill level, love for basketball, and dedication to his craft have made him one of the most respected players of his generation. We’re excited to work with him. »
Durant himself expressed his eagerness on social media: « My time in Phoenix comes to an end. All these stops along the way have really impacted me positively… Houston, can’t wait! »
This acquisition transforms Houston into a serious contender for the 2025-2026 season. Eliminated in the first round of playoffs despite their second place in the Western Conference, the Rockets hope that Durant will propel them further in the postseason. Suns General Manager Brian Gregory paid tribute to Durant’s impact: « One of the greatest to ever play, we are grateful for the impact Kevin had on our organization. »
