The Miami Heat front office is preparing to part ways with Terry Rozier in the coming days. According to several American media outlets, the Florida franchise plans to release the American guard to create a roster spot ahead of the playoffs. This decision comes while Rozier has been on indefinite leave since his indictment last October.
A complex situation linked to sports betting
Terry Rozier is the subject of an NBA investigation for his alleged involvement in an illegal sports betting network. The guard is accused of intentionally leaving a game in March 2023 as part of a scheme where he allegedly passed information to a friend, who then sold it to bettors to wager on his personal statistics. Rozier has denied any involvement in this system.
Initially placed on unpaid leave, the situation was resolved in the player’s favor after a grievance was filed by the NBA players association. This decision requires the Heat to pay the remaining $26.6 million on Rozier’s contract, which expires at the end of this season.
The Heat are expected to release Terry Rozier before the end of the regular season, per @Anthony_Chiang.

A problematic trade between Miami and Charlotte
Rozier’s arrival in Miami in January 2024, as part of a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, also created tensions between the two franchises. The Heat believes it should have been informed of the NBA and federal investigations before the trade was finalized.
To resolve this dispute, the Hornets agreed to send a 2025 second-round draft pick to Miami. According to ESPN, the Heat must release Rozier before 5 p.m. on April 9 so he can clear waivers before the end of the regular season.
The Heat held seventh place in the Eastern Conference before their Thursday night game against the Lakers, and this release could allow them to strengthen their roster for the playoff race.
