Steve Kerr wins an Oscar as executive producer

Steve Kerr, coach of the Golden State Warriors, can now add an Oscar win to his already impressive resume. The 59-year-old coach was one of the executive producers of the film « All the Empty Rooms, » which won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film on Sunday night.
This 35-minute documentary follows the work of journalist Steve Hartman and photographer Lou Bopp, who told the stories of families who transformed their children’s bedrooms—children killed in mass shootings—into actual memorials.
A personal commitment against gun violence
For Kerr, whose father was assassinated in 1984 while serving as president of the American University of Beirut, this cause holds a particularly personal dimension. The nine-time NBA champion coach as both player and coach, also an Olympic gold medalist with Team USA at the 2024 Paris Games, has long advocated for reasonable gun regulation.
« They called me about a year ago and asked if I would like to be an executive producer, which essentially meant putting my name on it and helping to promote it, » Kerr explained on Monday. « It was obvious, given my passion for this issue. And then after watching the film, I was blown away by its beauty and poignancy. »

Recognition beyond sports
Kerr was not present at the Oscar ceremony—the Warriors were playing Sunday night—and learned of the win through his family group chat. He noted that he would not receive a statuette, but said he is « very proud to be associated » with this project.
Director Joshua Seftel accepted the Oscar on Sunday night, then handed the microphone to Gloria Cazares, mother of a 9-year-old girl killed in the Uvalde, Texas shooting. « My daughter Jackie was 9 years old when she was killed in Uvalde, » Gloria Cazares said on stage. « Since that day, her room has been frozen in time. Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children and teenagers. »
Kerr becomes the second Warriors member involved in an Oscar win in recent years, after Stephen Curry who was executive producer of « The Queen of Basketball, » winner in 2022. « I am very passionate about this cause, » Kerr concluded, « but I don’t think this is going to make me a filmmaker. »
