Scoot Henderson: The Blazers’ Draft Mistake That Should Serve as a Lesson to the NBA

Scoot Henderson was once considered a consolation prize after missing out on Victor Wembanyama. In 2023, the Portland Trail Blazers had missed the generational French prospect by one lottery combination. At the time, the silver lining for Portland in selecting at 3rd overall was that they remained in that second tier of prospects, with Henderson and Brandon Miller. This made the Blazers’ decision-making easier, as they drafted whoever was available.

But in 2026, it has already become clear that Henderson was not the right choice for Portland. He’s not quite the bust some describe, but he has also failed to meet the high expectations of his draft class.

An Athlete Who No Longer Makes (Much) Difference

One reason Henderson’s transition to the NBA hasn’t been as smooth as hoped is that he’s no longer the elite athlete he was compared to the competition. He stood out in G League Ignite as a top-tier athlete, which allowed him to play to his strengths as a guard capable of penetrating at will, opening up the rest of his game.

This hasn’t been the case in the NBA, where Henderson is a good athlete, but not exceptional. He no longer gets by with the same ease, finding difficulties in his creation and ability to create separation. This has exposed weaknesses like his turnovers and shooting accuracy, as he can no longer rely on those strengths to mask them.

Lessons for the 2026 Draft

Teams should learn from the Henderson « mistake » in Portland. Draft misses happen all the time, but there’s a particular lesson to be learned from this Henderson selection. It shows that teams shouldn’t be locked into a consensus of prospects; they should consider options appropriate to their needs, outside of conventional choices.

Another trio of three prospects is forming this year between Cameron Boozer, Darryn Peterson, and AJ Dybantsa, but teams should really consider all their options. Boozer, Peterson, and Dybantsa all have something to prove. There are flaws among all the top options, whether it’s Boozer’s lack of explosiveness, concerns about Peterson’s durability and motivation, or Dybantsa‘s shot selection.

To get a return on these top pick investments, prospects need either very strong strengths or a sufficiently complete game. Henderson’s athleticism didn’t live up to the top-tier hype, and he has proven to be a role player to this day.
