An unconventional path to the NBA

The Charlotte Hornets have confirmed DJ Rodman’s invitation to their training camp. Dennis Rodman’s 24-year-old son takes a key step in his NBA quest after impressing during Summer League.

Undrafted out of USC where he was teammates with Bronny James, DJ Rodman had to take a detour. He first failed to convince the Golden State Warriors. Then, he joined the Maine Celtics in G-League last season.

His averages of 6.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists caught scouts’ attention. Rodman shows a unique profile with five college seasons at Washington State and USC. He totaled 143 NCAA games.

Headed to Greensboro Swarm

The NBA roster of the Hornets is full and all three two-way contracts are already assigned. DJ Rodman should therefore join the Greensboro Swarm, the affiliated G-League team. This step will provide him playing time and maintain his connection with the organization.

The two-way contract remains a realistic goal. This type of contract allows adding two or three players, mainly in G-League, with the possibility to play up to 50 NBA games.

Rodman evolves under a heavy family legacy. His father Dennis remains an NBA legend. His sister Trinity shines with the US soccer team. At 24, DJ wants to forge his own path. His style is more understated than his father’s, but just as determined.
