Player Profile

When Galen Edward Mitchell Smith III stepped onto an NBA court for the first time in April 2025, he carried far more than a Detroit Pistons jersey on his shoulders. The 24-year-old center became only the second graduate of a Hawaiian high school to reach the big league since 1957, an achievement that reflects his remarkable journey.

Nicknamed "Tolu" — "three" in Samoan — as the third Galen in his family line, he perfectly embodies the cultural blend that shapes his identity. The son of an African-American father who played college basketball and a Samoan mother who played at South Alabama, he grew up in a family where basketball runs in the blood. His parents even gave him the initials G.E.M.S., viewing their sons as their "gems."

His path to the top was anything but straightforward. After shining in Mississippi, his family moved to Hawaii in 2017 for his final year of high school. At Kahuku High School, he was named the state's best player in 2018, but injuries would go on to punctuate his college career at Western Kentucky and Mississippi State.

Undrafted in the 2024 draft, Smith refused to give up. After stints in the Summer League and the G League with the Motor City Cruise, he finally landed a two-way contract in January 2025. His NBA debut against Milwaukee — 14 points and 8 rebounds — confirmed his determination. For this family "gem" turned Hawaiian pride, the journey is just beginning.
