Player Profile

Growing up on the streets of Fort Greene in Brooklyn, few would have bet on Taj Gibson's unconventional journey. Born on June 24, 1985, this future NBA big man took many detours before finding his path, switching schools several times between Brooklyn and California.

At the University of Southern California, Gibson became one of the oldest freshmen in program history, but that maturity proved to be an asset. A member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, he impressed enough to earn a spot on the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team and contributed to the Pacific-10 Tournament championship in 2009.

Selected 26th overall by the Chicago Bulls in the 2009 NBA Draft, Gibson built his reputation on relentless energy and tenacious defense. This bench specialist moved through several franchises — the Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, and Charlotte Hornets — bringing the same defensive intensity wherever he went.

His level of play even earned him a spot training with the United States national team in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games. Despite undergoing surgery in 2015, Gibson demonstrated his resilience by coming back stronger, continuing to make valuable contributions to every team that called upon his services.

From his humble beginnings in Brooklyn to his remarkable NBA longevity, Taj Gibson embodies the perseverance of a player who turned a late start into a strength, becoming a respected veteran capable of raising the defensive level of any rotation.
