Player Profile

When Matt Ryan hit a decisive buzzer-beating three-pointer to send the Lakers into overtime against the Pelicans in November 2022, few spectators could imagine the journey this 25-year-old guard had taken to reach that magical moment.

Two years earlier, after completing his college career at Chattanooga with averages of 15.4 points per game, Ryan saw his NBA dreams shattered when he went undrafted in 2020. Holding an economics degree from Vanderbilt and working toward an MBA, he took on odd jobs: delivering for DoorDash and UberEats, working at a cemetery. A harsh fall for someone who had been named Mr. New York Basketball in high school and had led Iona Prep to its first diocesan Class AA championship.

But Ryan refused to give up. His determination brought him back to the G League courts, where he patiently rebuilt his reputation. His unconventional college path — Notre Dame, then Vanderbilt where he knocked down 59 three-pointers in a single season, before finishing at Chattanooga — already demonstrated his ability to adapt.

That resilience ultimately opened the doors to the NBA. Boston, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New Orleans, New York: Ryan collected jerseys but above all experiences, refining his game and his understanding of professional basketball. Each stint enriched his toolkit, each opportunity brought him closer to his goal.

From White Plains to NBA courts, Matt Ryan embodies perseverance in the face of adversity, turning every obstacle into a stepping stone toward success.
