Player Profile

When Marcus Garrett was four years old and already dribbling through the streets of Dallas, nobody could have imagined that a football injury would redefine his basketball destiny. Far from holding him back, that injury pushed him to dedicate himself entirely to basketball under the guidance of his uncle Matt Watts, a former San Diego State player who shaped his fundamentals.

At Skyline High School in Dallas, Garrett put up a remarkably rare stat line: averages of 17.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 3.1 steals, and 2.9 blocks per game as a senior. This exceptional versatility earned him the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year award and led his team to the Class 6A state semifinals.

At Kansas, which he chose over Texas and Baylor, Garrett built a reputation as a defensive specialist for the Jayhawks. Paradoxically, the point guard was initially criticized for his lack of range, but his rare defensive ability for a guard more than made up for that weakness. Even a severe ankle sprain did nothing to dent his determination.

Going undrafted in 2021, Garrett embarked on a winding professional career with the Miami Heat on a two-way contract, then the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League before being waived due to injury. His stints with the Greensboro Swarm, MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg, and the Charlotte Hornets stand as a testament to remarkable perseverance.

Garrett's defensive sharpness remains his basketball DNA, a valuable asset that continues to define his professional journey despite the obstacles along the way.
