Player Profile
When Malaki Branham walked the halls of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, he was literally following in LeBron James' footsteps. But the Columbus guard forged his own legacy, winning two Ohio State titles in 2018 and 2021, with an impressive record of 25 wins and 2 losses in his final high school season.
Coached from fifth grade by Jason Dawson, Branham accumulated 1,501 career points in high school before joining Ohio State University in 2021. His transition to college basketball was meteoric: he quickly became one of the Buckeyes' leading scorers, peaking with a 35-point performance that signaled his NBA potential.
Ranked as the 32nd overall prospect by ESPN, Branham made a bold decision after his freshman year by declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft. The San Antonio Spurs selected him 20th overall, drawn in by his ability to score from distance. His three-point shooting, hovering around 38.2% in his early professional seasons, quickly validated that bet.
Splitting time between the NBA and the G League with the Austin Spurs to further his development, Branham demonstrated remarkable tactical maturity for his age. The offensive breakout performances already seen at the college level continued to emerge regularly in a San Antonio uniform.
In July 2025, a new chapter opened with his trade to the Washington Wizards. At just 22 years old, the Ohio guard already carries the experience of big moments and the consistency of an elite shooter. Washington is betting on this rare combination of precocity and composure to build its future.
