Player Profile

Léo Westermann is a French international player. Son of Marc Westermann, former professional player for SIG, he started basketball very young at CO Haguenau before later joining Gries-Oberhoffen BC.

Quickly noticed, Léo Westermann joined the Alsace Youth Academy then the SLUC Nancy training center to play in U18 ELITE a year early. He then joined the France Academy in 2007. There, he became close to Evan Fournier, his 1992-born generation teammate with whom he reached the U18 EuroBasket final in 2009.

Turning professional at ASVEL in 2010 after an ACL tear, he played there for two years before fulfilling his dream by joining the young team of Partizan Belgrade. After a great 2012-2013 season team-wise, he suffered another ACL tear in November 2013. Despite this, FC Barcelona signed him the following summer. Subsequently, Léo Westermann was loaned to Limoges CSP where he won the French championship in 2015.

This return to France allowed him to take off again and he joined Zalgiris Kaunas. A tall, managing point guard, he had such a great season that CSKA Moscow signed him in summer 2017. A new serious injury prematurely ended his season and he relaunched his career in Kaunas in 2018-2019. A late-season run under Sarunas Jasikevicius helped the team reach the playoffs. His impact in this qualification was so significant that Fenerbahçe Istanbul - coached by Zeljko Obradovic - signed the Alsatian. However, his playing time decreased and he joined FC Barcelona mid-season to replace Thomas Heurtel.

Rarely used at Barça, Léo Westermann took advantage of Monaco's rise to EuroLeague to join their roster. In a squad with little experience at this level, he could have found an important role but his effectiveness didn't meet the club's expectations, who didn't retain him in summer 2022. Léo Westermann then returned to Spain with Obradoiro CAB, before experiencing a new adventure abroad in 2023-2024 with Crailsheim Merlins.

For the French national team, Léo Westermann quickly joined the senior team after a rich youth career. Called up during EuroBasket 2015 preparation to replace Thomas Heurtel, he won a bronze medal. In the squad two years later for another Euro, he hasn't been called up since by Vincent Collet.
