Leo Westermann (1.98m, 32 years old) is back at Obradoiro CAB. Two years after his first stint in Liga Endesa in 2022-2023 with the Galician club, the French point guard returns to the Santiago de Compostela club, this time in the Spanish second division (Primera FEB). An experienced addition for an ambitious team determined to quickly return to the elite.

A return to a club he knows well

During his first spell at Obradoiro, Leo Westermann averaged 6.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game. The club was then playing in Liga Endesa. Since then, times have changed: relegated to Primera FEB at the end of the 2023-2024 season, the Galician club now relies on experienced veterans to return to the top level. And who better than the former French international (27 caps) to lead this project?

At 32, Westermann remains a reference at his position in Europe. His resume is impressive, having played for Limoges, Partizan Belgrade, Zalgiris Kaunas, CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahçe, Barcelona (with whom he won the Liga ACB and Copa del Rey in 2021), Monaco… and more recently Fuenlabrada.

An experienced point guard aiming for promotion

In 2024-2025, Leo Westermann was one of the key players for Fuenlabrada, another former Liga Endesa club relegated to Primera FEB. In 33 games, he averaged 9 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. Most importantly, he was instrumental in qualifying the Madrid club for the ACB promotion Final Four. Defeated in the final by Real Betis, Westermann and his teammates fell just short of promotion.

After this strong campaign, the Alsatian point guard returns to Santiago. For coach Diego Epifanio, his profile is clear: « a tall player for position 1, a leader, intelligent, with good court vision and passing ability. Leo has a lot of experience and an impressive track record, with stints at major clubs and with the national team. And he’s coming off a very good season in this same competition. »

A new mission in Santiago de Compostela

More than a sentimental return, it’s a leadership mission that awaits Leo Westermann. At Obradoiro, he’ll find a familiar environment and a well-structured club hoping for a quick return to the elite. As a playmaking point guard with recognized court vision, he will undoubtedly be one of the spearheads of the project to return to Liga Endesa.

Nearly 33, the Alsatian seems to have found a tailor-made role in a competition he knows well and where his experience carries significant weight. A coherent choice in the latter stages of a career he continues to manage with clarity. Before becoming a successful coach?
