Player Profile

When Jalen "Stix" Smith's 6'10" frame steps onto the court, few can imagine the winding journey that brought him from the gyms of Baltimore to the NBA Finals. Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, this power forward/center built his character in Maryland, fueled by the legacy of Kobe Bryant and the unwavering support of his parents Charles and Orletha.

At Mount Saint Joseph in Baltimore, Smith wrote his first chapters of glory with dazzling statistics: 22.2 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks per game as a senior. A two-time Gatorade Maryland Boys Basketball Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American in 2018, he naturally went on to the University of Maryland, where he refined his game over two seasons.

Selected 10th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft by Phoenix, Smith immediately reached the heights by making the Finals in his very first year. But the road to establishing himself proved more winding. Stints in the G League, trades, and fluctuating roles taught the young big man the patience and perseverance that now define him.

It was in Indiana that Smith finally unlocked his potential, setting personal records with 18 rebounds against Houston and 23 points against the Clippers. Those performances opened the door to Chicago, where he signed a three-year, $27 million contract in July 2024.

Now firmly entrenched in the Bulls' rotation, Smith embodies a generation of players who have turned obstacles into springboards, armed with a determination forged through family values and the inspiration of legends.
