When GG Jackson II broke a record held by Kobe Bryant during his rookie season, the basketball world recognized that an exceptional talent had arrived. By becoming the youngest player in NBA history to record a double-double of 40 points and 10 rebounds, this forward from Columbia made a lasting impression well beyond his 19 years.
His journey to the top began at Ridge View High School, where Jackson built his reputation as a relentless finisher. In just his sophomore year, his averages of 15.8 points and 10 rebounds helped lead his team to the South Carolina Class 5A state championship. The following year, his stats exploded: 22.1 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, capped by a second consecutive state title and the South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year award.
A five-star recruit and the number one prospect in his class, Jackson surprised everyone by decommitting from North Carolina — the first such reversal for the Tar Heels since 2003 — to join the University of South Carolina. That bold decision paid off: he became the highest-ranked recruit in Gamecocks history, leading the team with 15.4 points per game during his one and only college season.
Selected 45th overall by Memphis in 2023, Jackson turned that second-round pick into a golden opportunity. Numerous injuries within the Grizzlies roster opened the door to playing time, which he seized with remarkable maturity. Splitting time between the NBA and the G League with the Memphis Hustle, he demonstrated a versatility and scoring ability that promise great years ahead in Tennessee.
