Player Profile
With a wingspan of nearly 6 feet 8 inches for a point guard, Elfrid Payton Jr. possesses an atypical physical profile that has shaped his NBA career over the past decade. Born in Louisiana, this standout from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette first made a name for himself with his signature voluminous hairstyle, which became his visual trademark on the court.
But behind that iconic image lies a well-rounded basketball player. During his junior year, Payton showcased his versatility by establishing himself as one of the best defenders in the country while also breaking out offensively. This rapid development earned him a spot on Team USA for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, where he started all nine games for the gold medal-winning squad.
Drafted 10th overall by Philadelphia and immediately traded to Orlando in 2014, Payton began his NBA journey with the Magic before making his debut on October 29, 2014. His all-around game — capable of scoring, distributing, rebounding, and defending — makes him a sought-after point guard, even though his career has taken him from franchise to franchise, from Orlando to New Orleans by way of New York.
Released by the Pelicans in late 2024, Payton is currently a free agent. At 30 years old, this veteran with well-regarded defensive skills and an exceptional wingspan for his position is looking for a new opportunity to prove that his smart basketball and versatility remain valuable assets in the league.
