When Cory Joseph was a teenager in Pickering, he had no idea he would one day face Stephen Curry on youth courts, or lift the NBA trophy alongside the San Antonio Spurs. Yet the signs were already there: in a family where basketball ran in the blood, where his parents coached and refereed, and where his brothers and cousins played at the college or professional level, Cory was developing the leadership mentality that defines him today.

His journey took on a national dimension when he led Pickering High School to back-to-back provincial titles before joining the prestigious Findlay Prep in Nevada. Alongside Tristan Thompson, he won two national high school championships and earned tournament MVP honors. That ability to shine in crucial moments followed him to the University of Texas, where he became a starter in his very first year.

Selected 29th overall by San Antonio in 2011, the Canadian point guard learned the art of defense and leadership under Gregg Popovich. That training paid off in 2014 when he won the NBA championship with the Spurs. His journey took a special turn when he joined the Toronto Raptors, representing his home country in the NBA.

As captain of the Canadian national team, Joseph embodies the generation of players who elevated Canadian basketball to the world stage. Recognized for his defensive performances and his ability to raise his game in decisive moments, he has continued to play with the Orlando Magic since July 2024, still carrying the high standards forged in his family environment in Pickering.
