Not in Monaco’s plans, Nick Calathes may have found a good exit option

EuroLeague - While AS Monaco would like to release Nick Calathes from his final contract year, the Greek point guard could bounce back at Olympiacos, with his arrival being considered following Keenan Evans' injury.

The future of Nick Calathes (1.96m, 36 years old) at Monaco is uncertain. The Greek veteran still has one year left on his contract with Roca Team, but the Principality club would like to release him. However, the Floridian will only leave if he receives an equivalent salary offer.

According to Gazzetta.gr, reported by several Greek media outlets, Olympiacos is considering the Greek international point guard to cover for Keenan Evans, who is injured with an ankle problem and unavailable for 15-20 days. The former Zalgiris Kaunas player will notably miss the first EuroLeague game against Baskonia on September 30.

Still under contract with Monaco

Having joined AS Monaco in June 2024, Nick Calathes participated in the 2025 Final Four, eliminating Olympiacos in the semifinals before losing in the final. However, he is no longer in Vassilis Spanoulis’ plans. Still tied to Roca Team until 2026, he can only join a new club through contract termination or financial agreement. The amount of any potential compensation will play a key role in discussions.

Bartzokas’ Esteem

Georgios Bartzokas, Olympiacos’ coach, knows the point guard well and thinks very highly of him. The Greek coach had already tried to recruit him in the past, and the mutual respect between the two men could influence the decision.

As a reminder, Calathes had a modest statistical season (3.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game in EuroLeague). However, with his career average of 5.8 assists and status as the competition’s all-time assist leader, the former Panathinaikos player – Olympiacos’ rival club – remains capable of providing experience and organization.

A Possible Double Reinforcement

According to Greek media, Olympiacos might even recruit two guards, even if Calathes signs. This shows that the Piraeus club wants to secure its backcourt from the season’s start. The possibility of signing Monte Morris (1.88m, 30 years old) is mentioned by Matteo Andreani.
