The Miami Heat will have to manage without their top scorer Norman Powell for at least one week. The All-Star guard is suffering from a right groin strain sustained during Thursday night’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers, as confirmed by the Florida franchise on Friday.

Grade 1 injury confirmed by MRI

Powell was injured in the first half of Miami‘s loss in Philadelphia. An MRI confirmed a Grade 1 strain, which is low severity, and the Heat indicated that the player’s status is now classified as « week-to-week. »

This absence represents a significant blow for Miami, as Powell is the team’s leading scorer this season with an average of 22.5 points per game. Statistics reveal the guard’s crucial importance to the Heat: the team posts a record of 22 wins and 16 losses when Powell scores at least 19 points, compared to only 9 wins and 13 losses when he fails to reach that total or doesn’t play.

Favorable schedule for return

If Powell only misses one week, his absence could be limited to just four games: at home against Houston on Saturday, at home against Brooklyn on Tuesday and Thursday, then at Charlotte on Friday. The timing could prove relatively favorable since Saturday’s game against the Rockets begins a stretch where Miami will play seven home games out of eight contests.

Powell is in his first season with the Heat after being selected for the first time in his career to the All-Star Game. The guard leads Miami‘s offensive statistics this season, topping the team in total field goals made, 3-pointers made, and free throws converted. His temporary absence will force the Heat to reshuffle offensively while awaiting his return to the court.
