The Golden State Warriors and Steve Kerr remain locked in ongoing discussions about the future, with the 60-year-old coach’s decision to return for a 13th season still undecided. After a two-hour meeting on Monday between Kerr, controlling owner Joe Lacob, and general manager Mike Dunleavy, both sides plan to reconvene next week to continue talks.

League sources described the Monday meeting as productive, though no resolution has emerged nearly two weeks after the Warriors’ season ended in Phoenix. Kerr will take a previously planned golf trip to close out this week as those around him continue to describe the coach as torn about his choice.

« It’s April, » one source said. « We don’t need to rush. » However, the calendar flips to May in the coming days, with the draft lottery arriving on May 10 as the first notable offseason checkpoint.

Shifting Odds and Future Considerations

What initially appeared to be a likely departure has evolved into a more balanced proposition. According to league sources, the odds of Kerr’s return have shifted significantly from the immediate aftermath of the season’s end.

« I think it’s more like 50-50 that he comes back, » a source said. « When the season ended, I would have said it was at least 60-40 that he’d leave. »

Another source noted that Kerr sounded in his Monday meeting like someone who had a « plan on coaching next season, » suggesting the legendary coach may be leaning toward continuing his tenure with Golden State.

At this stage of his career, having just wrapped up his 12th season, there’s an agreed belief that Kerr still makes sense as head coach leading a firm playoff contender built around Steph Curry and Draymond Green, but not necessarily as the fresh face of a reconstruction.

« I still love coaching, but I get it, » Kerr said the night the Warriors were eliminated. « These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it’s time for new blood and new ideas. »

The Warriors enter the draft lottery in the 11th slot, carrying a 9.4% chance of jumping into the top four and a 77.6% chance of remaining at 11th. That lottery pick represents an important tool within the Warriors’ plan to rearrange the roster this summer, which factors into Kerr’s decision-making process.

Team sources maintain this is purely a « basketball decision, » based around Kerr’s desire to keep coaching, management’s desire for offensive philosophy and staffing tweaks, and whether there’s collective belief the Warriors can utilize the offseason to better compete in a crowded Western Conference. Warriors management has not started any coaching search, which would only commence if Kerr opts to depart.
