Karim Lopez has officially declared for the 2026 NBA draft, marking a potentially historic moment for Mexican basketball. The New Zealand Breakers forward announced his decision Monday, setting the stage to become the first player born in Mexico to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft.
« It’s been my dream and my goal my whole life to play in the NBA, » Lopez told ESPN. « Honestly, since I can remember. I was probably like 5 years old, making drawings of myself playing in the NBA. … It’s pretty special, you know, to be in this position right now. »
The 18-year-old prospect, who turns 19 on April 12, has captured NBA scouts’ attention with his impressive combination of size and skill. Standing 6-foot-9 with a 7-1 wingspan, Lopez brings the versatility that modern NBA teams covet from the power forward position.
Strong NBL Performance Sets Foundation
Lopez’s second season with the Breakers showcased significant development, averaging 11.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.0 blocks in 31 games. He shot 50.2 percent from the field overall and 32.6 percent from beyond the arc, demonstrating the perimeter skills that make him an intriguing prospect.
The Mexican forward set several records for draft-eligible NBL Next Stars, including the single-season points record with 358 points in 30 starts. He also tied the record for combined steals and blocks with 66, highlighting his defensive impact alongside veteran teammates.
« [The NBL] was a lot of learning in both years, a great chapter of my life, » Lopez said. « I think once I was completely healthy, [this season] took off in the right direction. Obviously, I would have liked to make the playoffs, but winning the Ignite Cup was big time. »
Jonathan Wasserman’s latest Bleacher Report mock draft projects Lopez as the No. 12 pick to the Golden State Warriors. The draft expert compared him to Orlando Magic star Franz Wagner, noting his strength and versatility despite being just 18 years old in a physical professional league.
Lopez’s journey from Hermosillo, Mexico, to potential NBA first-rounder represents more than personal achievement. The son of former Mexican national team player Jesús Hiram Lopez moved to Spain at age 14 to join Joventut Badalona before joining the Breakers in 2024.
« A goal of mine is to hopefully reach young people in Mexico, » Lopez said. « Trying to grow the sport and inspire athletes and people in general to follow their dreams. Show people that it doesn’t matter where you’re from. »
