North Carolina freshman Caleb Wilson has officially declared for the NBA Draft, ending his one-and-done tenure with the Tar Heels after what he described as « the most fun year of my life. » The program released a video statement Monday from the 6-foot-10 forward, formalizing a decision that had been anticipated since his « #8out » social media post late last month.
« I am grateful for the opportunity I had to represent North Carolina, » Wilson said in his statement. « Wearing No. 8, running out of that historic tunnel every day for practice and games, and I’m happy to say every day I gave it my all. »
A promising season derailed by injuries
Wilson’s freshman campaign showcased his immense potential despite being cut short by a series of unfortunate injuries. The forward averaged 19.8 points and 9.4 rebounds in what was shaping up to be a breakout season before injury struck at the worst possible moment.
The first setback came just days after a thrilling victory against rival Duke, when Wilson suffered a broken bone in his left hand. As he neared his return to action, disaster struck again with a broken right thumb sustained during a non-contact drill, ending his season on the eve of the second matchup against the Blue Devils.
Despite the abbreviated campaign, Wilson’s impact was undeniable. His performances earned him second-team Associated Press All-American recognition, a distinction that guarantees his jersey will be honored among the rafters at the Smith Center alongside other Tar Heel legends.
Wilson is projected to be selected fourth overall in ESPN‘s latest mock draft for the star-studded 2026 class, reflecting his status as one of the top prospects available in the June draft. His combination of size, skill, and production during his healthy stretches at UNC has NBA scouts excited about his professional potential, making his one-and-done path a logical next step in his basketball journey.
