Mike James attempted to put out the fire. Just hours after his altercation with Elie Okobo on the AS Monaco bench during their defeat against Fenerbahçe Istanbul (88-70) in EuroLeague, the American guard published an apology message on social media.

On his X account (formerly Twitter), Mike James made a point of publicly apologizing to his French teammate and his family after the incident that occurred at the end of the match. « So this is my public apology for how i handled the end of the game yesterday. To my brother Elie and the Okobo family i apologize. It’s embarrassing for us all and i definitely should have handled it differently and let my emotions get the best of me. »

A tense incident amid Monaco’s struggles

During the match, visibly very irritated by his teammate’s attitude, Mike James had waited for Elie Okobo on the bench before pushing him, causing a brief altercation between the two players who had to be separated.

This episode comes as the Roca Team is going through a particularly difficult period. Beaten in Istanbul (88-70), the Monaco team suffered their seventh defeat in the last eight EuroLeague matches. Rumors of Vassilis Spanoulis‘ resignation, though not confirmed, are intensifying.

Still 10th in the standings, which is the last qualifying spot for the play-in, Monaco sees their situation seriously weakening in the race for the final phase, while at the administrative and financial level the situation remains unclear. Beyond the court, the Principality club must also handle an important deadline with a hearing scheduled before the Monaco court of first instance to rule on the structure’s viability.

In this already delicate context, Mike James’ public apology aims to calm a situation that has become very tense around AS Monaco. The American guard’s gesture demonstrates his willingness to restore harmony within a team that desperately needs unity to overcome their current crisis and secure their place in the EuroLeague playoffs.
