The Dallas Mavericks delivered a spectacular offensive performance Thursday night, defeating the Utah Jazz 144-122, led by a historic Klay Thompson. The 35-year-old veteran scored 26 points, his season high, while climbing another step in NBA history.
Thompson Passes Damian Lillard on All-Time 3-Point List
The evening will be memorable for Thompson, who passed Damian Lillard to claim fourth place on the all-time career 3-pointers made list. With his 2,805th converted three-pointer at 1 minute 18 seconds remaining in the first quarter, the former Golden State Warriors star celebrated the moment by raising both fists to the sky.
« Anytime you can get in the history books, that’s pretty cool, » Thompson said after the game. « I just enjoyed that moment of euphoria for a second. » The sharpshooter finished the evening with six 3-pointers made, matching his season high, on an excellent 10-for-18 shooting.
Thompson now has 2,809 long-range makes, with only Stephen Curry (4,201), James Harden (3,293), and Ray Allen (2,973) ahead of him. « I hope one day, if I stay healthy, I can pass Ray Allen. That would be really cool for me, » he shared.
A Collective Victory Despite Absences
This remarkable performance came in a difficult context for Dallas, missing eight players including rookie Cooper Flagg, who was injured in Wednesday’s game against Denver. Coach Jason Kidd had to call upon two-way contract players and even an emergency signing to fill out his roster.
Moussa Cissé, a two-way player in just his sixth NBA game, brilliantly seized his opportunity with a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds. Ryan Nembhard, also on a two-way contract, added 12 points and 10 assists off the bench. « I never know when I’m going to get in, » Cissé explained. « So whenever I get a chance, I go out there and perform. »
Naji Marshall (22 points) and Caleb Martin also contributed to this collective victory, with the Mavericks setting multiple season records with 144 points scored and 19 3-pointers made. Dallas (16-26) faced a Jazz team (14-27) that was also short-handed, notably without Lauri Markkanen due to illness.
« This was one of those wins you remember, » Thompson summarized. « These tough mid-January days were fun. You’re playing with guys who cherish these moments and don’t get the opportunity as frequently as we do. It was great. »
