Kings insist: Russell Westbrook remains a serious option

Russell Westbrook remains unsigned as the NBA season rapidly approaches. The 2017 MVP is still waiting for an opportunity, and the Sacramento Kings remain his best option to return to the court this season.
The Sacramento Kings are reportedly ‘trying very hard’ to trade Malik Monk to open up a roster spot for Russell Westbrook, per @GrantAfseth

Roster issues complicating negotiations
The main obstacle to « Brodie’s » arrival in California lies in the Kings’ backcourt depth. With Dennis Schröder, Devin Carter, Zach LaVine and Malik Monk already on the roster, Sacramento faces a real logjam in the guard positions.
According to Marc Stein, the California executives had initially considered trading Malik Monk to make room for Westbrook. However, no satisfactory deal could be reached, particularly with the Warriors who rejected offers including Monk in exchange for Jonathan Kuminga.
Despite this complex situation, the Kings particularly appreciate Russell Westbrook’s profile and his ability to create opportunities for his teammates, an aspect the team lacked last season. This quality could prove crucial in Sacramento’s playing system.
Impact on the entire rotation
Westbrook’s potential arrival would shake up the Kings’ entire rotation. Malik Monk, who played a record 31.6 minutes per game last season, could see his minutes significantly reduced, potentially down to 22.3 minutes as in the 2022-2023 season.
Keon Ellis, despite his excellent career 3-point percentage of 42.9%, would also see his role diminished. The young player, who deserves a starting position, risks being relegated to the bench with fewer offensive opportunities.
For Dennis Schröder, who arrived as starting point guard, Westbrook’s arrival could be an asset. He would no longer be alone in creating plays and would maintain around 27-28 minutes. This would help preserve his energy throughout the season.
