This Spurs player suspended for two games after fight with Argentina

David Jones-Garcia, the 23-year-old shooting guard/small forward on a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs, has been suspended for two games by FIBA after his involvement in a general brawl that occurred Sunday following the Dominican Republic’s victory over Argentina (84-83 in overtime).

The incident erupted right after the final whistle of an already tense match. Footage shows Argentine player Gonzalo Bressan provoking Jones-Garcia and his teammates before pushing him. The Dominican lost his temper and struck Bressan multiple times.
Heavy sanctions and public apologies
FIBA imposed severe sanctions following this incident. They suspended Jones-Garcia for two games and Gonzalo Bressan for two games as well. On the Dominican side, Juan Suero and Juan Guerrero each received one-game suspensions, while Angel Delgado will serve one game and be placed on three years probation. FIBA also fined both federations 20,000 Swiss francs and Argentine coach Pablo Prigioni 2,000 francs.
Jones-Garcia posted an apology on Instagram. He explained that he reacted after being hit by a player and after a teammate received a racist insult. He took responsibility and apologized to FIBA, the Spurs, his country, and the Argentine people.
This suspension comes at a bad time: he’s averaging 21 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. A Summer League revelation, he will miss the game against Nicaragua and the first elimination round. This incident halts his momentum and forces him to demonstrate his maturity.
