Jonathan Kuminga finds himself at the center of a tug-of-war between several NBA franchises. The young Congolese forward of the Golden State Warriors, who will become a restricted free agent this summer, is drawing interest from Chicago and Miami, two teams ready to offer him a prominent role.

According to HoopsHype, « the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat are two teams to watch as potential candidates for a sign-and-trade with Kuminga. » The 22-year-old « is seeking an expanded and consistent role for the future, » which could jeopardize his future at Golden State, where he has alternated between starter and bench player.

A talent constrained by irregular playing time

Kuminga’s frustrations about his usage are not new. Last April, he expressed his annoyance: « I hate that everyone tells me to be ready, to prepare. I already know I’m ready. The more you keep telling me to get ready, the more irritating it becomes. »

After a promising 2023-24 season where he started 46 of his 74 games played averaging 16.1 points, Kuminga saw his playing time decrease last season. Limited to 47 games due to injuries, he still maintained an average of 15.3 points per game, demonstrating his offensive potential.

Joe Lacob torn between attachment and economic reality

Warriors owner Joe Lacob doesn’t hide his attachment to the young Congolese. « It’s difficult because you become close to all the players. So yes, it would probably be complicated to lose someone who’s been here for four years. He’s part of our franchise and he’s a good guy, » he shares.

However, Lacob acknowledges the financial constraints: « It’s also a business and we need to do what’s best to build a team. » Despite his desire to keep Kuminga, he admits that « the dollars might well be missing » to match external offers.

« It would take a lot for me not to match the offer, » states Joe Lacob. « But again, we have to look at our team and make the best decision. » The verdict will come quickly with the opening of free agency on June 30, where Kuminga could finally get the leadership role he’s seeking, whether at Golden State or elsewhere.
