Having joined ASVEL in 2022, Joffrey Lauvergne (2.11 m, 33 years old) will no longer wear the Villeurbanne jersey next season. In an interview with Le Progrès, the former NBA center confirmed he would leave the Rhône club during the offseason, pointing to a lack of interest from management in extending his contract.

« The club never showed any interest in keeping me »

Currently in the midst of the Betclic ELITE playoff semifinals against AS Monaco, Joffrey Lauvergne has made official what many already assumed: his story with ASVEL will end this summer. « There’s little chance. The club never showed any interest in keeping me, » he confided to Le Progrès.

Having returned to France in 2022 after stints in Spain, Serbia, NBA, Russia, Turkey, and Lithuania, the former French international now hopes to conclude this Lyon adventure on a positive note. « So I want to finish well and leave with a title. And anything is possible! It won’t be easy, but I feel that this year there’s room to achieve something. »

Already victorious against Monaco in Game 1 of the series Tuesday night at LDLC Arena, ASVEL proved they have what it takes to challenge the defending champions. And Joffrey Lauvergne remains confident: « We have enough talent and the team chemistry is good enough for it to be possible. On Tuesday again, we showed that we need to be taken seriously. »

With this departure now confirmed, ASVEL will need to rethink its frontcourt this summer with a budget likely reduced due to the club’s economic difficulties. But for now, the French veteran remains focused on the common goal: securing another national title.
