The Milwaukee Bucks have reached an agreement with Thanasis Antetokounmpo for a one-year contract worth $2.9 million guaranteed. The older brother of superstar Giannis returns after missing the entire 2024-2025 season due to a ruptured Achilles tendon.

At 33, the Greek forward proves he has regained his physical capabilities while currently playing with the national team during EuroBasket 2025. His statistics with Greece (averaging 3.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals) demonstrate his returned form, under the watchful eyes of coach Doc Rivers and his assistant Darvin Ham.

A strategic message to keep Giannis

This signing goes far beyond pure basketball considerations. By bringing back Thanasis, Milwaukee sends a strong signal: Giannis Antetokounmpo is set to begin his 13th season with the franchise that drafted and developed him.

Thanasis’ impact on the roster isn’t measured in statistics – his modest 0.9 points and 0.4 rebounds in 4.6 minutes during the 2023-2024 season prove that. Present alongside Giannis since 2019, he represents much more than a rotation player. His value lies in his locker room presence and the family support he provides to the Bucks’ star.

Restored stability for the organization

With over 200 games played in a Milwaukee uniform and an NBA championship ring earned in 2021, Thanasis embodies continuity in a rebuilding roster. His extension provides welcome stability for a franchise that experienced turbulence this summer.

This $2.9 million strategic decision represents a minimal investment to maintain the franchise player’s happiness. In a league where keeping superstars satisfied sometimes requires creative approaches, Milwaukee is betting on family ties to secure its future.

The idea of Giannis leaving, discussed during the offseason, now seems much less likely. The Bucks can thus calmly organize their season around their double MVP, confident that the Antetokounmpo family remains united in Wisconsin.
