Fenerbahçe secured their spot in the Turkish Cup semifinals with an 83-76 victory over Petr Cornelie‘s Esenler Erokspor, but the win came at a significant cost. The reigning European champions will be without one of their key interior players for an extended period, creating immediate concerns for their championship defense.
Nicolo Melli, a crucial component of Fenerbahçe‘s frontcourt rotation, suffered a foot injury during the quarterfinal clash and will require surgery. The 35-year-old Italian international is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, dealing a substantial blow to the Turkish powerhouse’s ambitions across multiple competitions.

A veteran presence lost at crucial time
While Melli’s statistical contributions this season may appear modest – averaging 6.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 17 minutes per game in EuroLeague play – his impact extends far beyond the numbers. The experienced forward has been instrumental in maintaining the collective balance of the defending European champions, having been part of the squad that captured the continental trophy last season.
The timing of Melli’s injury compounds an already challenging physical situation for Fenerbahçe. Chris Silva, who joined the club in mid-January from AEK Athens, also suffered an injury just days after his arrival. This double blow has left the Turkish club’s interior rotation severely compromised as they approach the decisive stages of the season.
The coaching staff now faces the urgent task of finding solutions, potentially requiring swift action in the transfer market to secure their frontcourt before the final EuroLeague sprint. Selon insider Matteo Andreani, several names are circulating to reinforce the Istanbul-based frontcourt, including Charles Bassey. The Nigerian center recently played two minutes against Mohamed Diawara‘s New York Knicks, marking his first NBA appearance since the preseason in October.
With the injuries of Chris Silva and Nicolò Melli, Fenerbahçe Beko Istanbul is looking at the market for a big man.
Several names including Charles Bassey, I’m told.

Bassey represents an athletic profile with rim-protecting capabilities that could provide immediate impact. However, whether Fenerbahçe can quickly finalize a signing to compensate for Melli’s absence while maintaining competitiveness across all competitions remains to be seen.
