The Cleveland Cavaliers will have to do without their star point guard Darius Garland for at least a week. The two-time All-Star is suffering from a grade 1 sprain of his right big toe, an injury that occurred on January 14 during the 133-107 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers.
Garland was injured midway through the third quarter Wednesday night after losing the ball. He was helped up and limped slowly to the bench before heading to the locker room with a towel over his head. Additional tests and imaging performed Saturday at Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine confirmed the diagnosis.
This right foot injury adds to Garland‘s recurring problems with his left big toe, which had bothered him at the end of last season and during the playoffs. The 25-year-old point guard had undergone surgery during the offseason to treat that initial injury, which delayed the start of his 2025-2026 season.
Before leaving against Philadelphia, Garland was averaging 17.9 points and 6.9 assists in 25 games this season. He had scored 20 points and delivered 7 assists in 23 minutes before leaving the game. Over his last 16 games, his statistics rose to 20.2 points and 7.4 assists, with an excellent 50.4% shooting percentage and 42 three-pointers made on 100 attempts.
Darius Garland is OUT with a Right Foot Injury. 🚨
🤕 Judging by the way the foot rolled on his way down, it looks like it could be a minor foot sprain or possibly even an ankle sprain. Timeline: 1-3 Weeks.

Garland‘s absence comes at a difficult time for Cleveland, which is going through a complicated season marked by injuries. After displaying the best record in the Eastern Conference last season, the Cavaliers currently sit in fifth place with a record of 24 wins and 19 losses.
During this seven to ten day re-evaluation period, Garland will miss important matchups against the Thunder, the Hornets, the Kings, the Magic (twice) and the Lakers. The organization will need to rely on Craig Porter Jr., Lonzo Ball and possibly Tyrese Proctor to compensate for the absence of their floor general.
