It’s now official: PJ Washington will stay in Dallas for the next four seasons. The 27-year-old forward has signed a contract extension worth $90 million with the Mavericks, according to his agency LIFT Sports Management. This decision was expected since the player became eligible for this extension last Friday.

Consistent progress rewarded with major contract
After arriving in Texas from Charlotte in February 2024, PJ Washington quickly established himself as a key player for the Mavericks. His defensive versatility and three-point shooting made him crucial in the team’s run to the NBA Finals.
Last season as a starter, Washington posted solid statistics with averages of 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks across 57 games. These performances have earned him a significant salary increase, with a first-year salary of $19.8 million, representing a 140% increase from his 2025-2026 compensation.
Dallas strengthens its core for the future
This extension is part of a broader strategy by the Mavericks, who have also recently secured Kyrie Irving and Daniel Gafford. The Texas franchise is betting on roster stability to maintain its contender status in the West, with a frontcourt now considered one of the deepest and most balanced in the league.
Drafted 12th overall in 2019 after two college seasons with Kentucky Wildcats, Washington has shown steady improvement, first with the Charlotte Hornets and then with the Mavericks. This major contract represents a well-deserved reward for a player who has successfully adapted and established himself in different environments.
However, this signing creates financial challenges for Dallas. Experts believe the Mavericks could exceed the second apron by the 2026-2027 season, a limit set to restrict heavily invested teams. Management will need to adjust its finances to maintain long-term flexibility while preserving its sporting ambitions.
