The Basketball Champions League (BCL) is about to tip off its 11th season, and the 2026-27 edition might just be the most consequential in the competition’s history. The stakes have never been higher: for the first time ever, the two finalists will earn a direct spot in NBA Europe, the upcoming pan-European league backed by the NBA. With a record 54 teams from 29 countries and a minimum of 194 games spread over eight months, the BCL is fast becoming a competition no basketball fan can afford to ignore — and some are already asking whether it’s now Europe’s second-best competition, ahead of the EuroCup.

Here’s everything you need to know about how the 2026-27 Basketball Champions League works.

The Big Picture: 54 Teams, 8 Months, One Trophy

The BCL brings together clubs from across Europe, including many national champions representing their countries on the continental stage. Games are scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to avoid conflicts with domestic league calendars, and all international team windows are protected within the competition schedule.

A total of 32 teams will take part in the Regular Season phase. Of those, 30 qualify directly based on sporting merit (league standings, BCL Club and Country Rankings), while 2 earn their spot through the Qualification Rounds.

Phase 1 — Qualification Rounds (from September 14, 2026)

The competition officially kicks off on September 14, 2026, with the Qualification Rounds. 24 teams compete across two separate qualification tournaments, drawn from four pots based on BCL Club and Country Rankings. Only 2 teams will advance to the Regular Season from this stage — making it a high-pressure, winner-takes-most format right from the start.

Phase 2 — Regular Season (October 6 – December 23, 2026)

The Regular Season tips off on October 6 and runs through December 23, 2026. The 32 qualified clubs are split into 8 groups of 4 teams, with every team playing home and away against each opponent in their group (classic round-robin format).

At the end of the Regular Season:

  • 🥇 The group winner (8 teams) advances directly to the Round of 16
  • 🥈🥉 The 2nd and 3rd-place teams (16 teams) drop into the Play-In round

Phase 3 — Play-In (January 2027): Best-of-3 Battles

In January, 16 teams fight for survival in a best-of-3 Play-In series. Home-court advantage goes to the second-place finishers from each group. The 8 Play-In winners join the 8 group winners already qualified, completing the 16-team field for the Round of 16.

This format means no team is mathematically eliminated before Christmas — every game in the group stage carries real weight.

Phase 4 — Round of 16 (Late January – March 2027)

The Round of 16 reunites 16 clubs — 8 Regular Season group winners and 8 Play-In survivors — split into 4 groups of 4, again playing home-and-away round-robin. This phase runs from late January to March 2027. The top 2 teams from each group (8 clubs total) move on to the Quarter-Finals.

Phase 5 — Quarter-Finals (April 2027): Best-of-3 Again

In April, the 8 remaining teams meet in another best-of-3 series. First-place finishers from the Round of 16 groups enjoy home-court advantage. The 4 winners punch their tickets to the Final Four.

Phase 6 — Final Four: One Weekend, One Champion

The season ends with a Final Four tournament, hosted in a single city over one weekend. The Semi-Finals are played on Friday, and the Championship Game takes place on Sunday. One trophy, one champion — and, as of this season, two spots in NBA Europe for the finalists.

Why This Season Matters: The NBA Europe Connection

The biggest storyline heading into the 2026-27 BCL isn’t just the basketball — it’s what winning (or even reaching the final) means off the court. Starting this season, the BCL will serve as an official qualification pathway for NBA Europe. The projected format for the NBA Europe league features 12 permanent franchises and 4 qualified slots — and the BCL is set to be one of the main roads to earning one of those spots.

That shift in stakes is already reshaping the competition. The 2026-27 field is considered stronger than ever, with clubs that might previously have targeted only the EuroCup now setting their sights on the BCL. For European basketball, this could be a defining season.
