Giannoulis Larentzakis close to leaving Olympiacos: three-year deal with AEK Athens ready

Giannoulis Larentzakis is close to leaving Olympiacos Piraeus for AEK Athens, with a three-year deal being finalized. According to BeBasket, “the Greek guard, barring any major surprises, will sign with AEK Athens, with the club prepared to execute a buyout of approximately €150,000.” The 32-year-old, who stands 1.96m and plays shooting guard, has spent the last six seasons in Piraeus after arriving in July 2020.

A return to the club where he won three titles
The move would mark a homecoming for Larentzakis, who first joined AEK Athens in June 2016 when the club paid a €25,000 buyout to CAI Zaragoza and signed him to a four-year contract. He stayed at AEK through the 2018-2019 season before moving to Olympiacos in 2020. He won three titles: the Greek Cup, the Basketball Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup.

A steep decline in playing time at Olympiacos
The expected departure follows a dramatic drop in Larentzakis’ role at Olympiacos. In EuroLeague, his minutes peaked in 2022-2023 at 14.4 per game with 6.4 points on 37.4% from 3-points across 41 appearances. Since then his usage has collapsed: 12.8 minutes in 2023-2024, just 4.1 minutes in 2024-2025, and only 1.5 minutes across 14 games so far in 2025-2026, with 0.1 points and 0 makes on 5 attempts from 3-points. In the Greek league, Esake, he has retained more of a rotation role, averaging 9.7 minutes and 4.4 points this season on 35.5% shooting from deep, down from 14.1 minutes and 7.6 points in 2024-2025.
Despite his diminished club role, Larentzakis has remained effective for the Greek national team. In 2025 World Cup qualifiers, he averaged 21.3 minutes, 11.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 44.4% from 3-points across six games. At EuroBasket 2025, he played 10.5 minutes per game across eight appearances, scoring 3.1 points on 42.9% from beyond the arc. That contrast between his national-team production and his shrinking club minutes appears to be a key driver behind his impending move back to AEK Athens.
