AS Monaco Has Just Paid the 2025-2026 Luxury Tax

Monaco is still navigating a financial storm, but the Roca Team just hit a key milestone. According to our information and reporting from Nice-Matin, Monaco settled its 2025–2026 Luxury Tax on Monday, March 23—a move that will send nearly €120,000 to each of the other fifteen Betclic ELITE clubs.

The payment is estimated between €1.65 and €1.8 million depending on sources, pushing Monaco’s total contributions to the Ligue Nationale de Basket this season to around €2.25 million. That figure includes various commitments and fines already paid earlier in March, underlining just how expensive it’s been to stay at the top.

Threat of Playoff Exclusion Removed

This settlement is far from minor. The Luxury Tax had become one of the main regulatory hurdles for AS Monaco, with the very real threat of being excluded from the Betclic ELITE playoffs if the payment wasn’t made.

By clearing the debt before the end-of-March deadline, Monaco removes that risk entirely and locks in its place in the championship finals—right as the team sits in a strong sporting position.

The move is also part of a broader financial cleanup that has been underway since early March, driven in large part by the backing and push of the Monaco State, signaling a clear effort to stabilize things off the court while the team keeps delivering on it.

Monaco State Still on the Front Line

Since March 5, the Principality has taken on a central role in keeping the club afloat. It already injected €2.5 million to clear the most urgent debts—salaries, social contributions, and supplier payments—through the Société Nationale de Financement (SNF).

From there, outstanding debts to the Ligue Nationale de Basket and the Fédération Française de Basket-Ball were gradually settled, culminating with the payment of the 2025–2026 Luxury Tax.

The strategy is pretty clear: stabilize the situation quickly and give AS Monaco Basket the runway to finish the 2025–2026 season without disruption—both domestically in Betclic ELITE and on the EuroLeague stage.

A Still Very Unclear Future After April 3

However, nothing is fully resolved yet. The club’s future is still hanging in the balance ahead of the April 3 hearing before the Monaco court.

A judicial administrator is expected to present a detailed financial report, and several outcomes remain on the table—including the possibility of a formal cessation of payments that could push the club under full State control.

At this point, no credible takeover project has clearly emerged. The current public intervention looks more like a short-term lifeline than a long-term solution, aimed primarily at preventing a collapse in the middle of the season.

In the meantime, AS Monaco Basket keeps moving forward on the court, with a key EuroLeague road test scheduled for Tuesday, March 24 against Olimpia Milano.
