Fenerbahçe shatters AS Monaco’s EuroLeague title dream!
Lilian Bordron
Since winning the EuroCup title in 2021, Monaco has been operating on one-year stints in EuroLeague, without necessarily obtaining a long-term license like other European powerhouses. Each season, qualifying for playoffs was the key element that allowed extending this tenure, without any guarantee of a stable future.
A 3-year license that rewards Roca Team’s efforts
According to Nice Matin, Monaco is likely to become the 14th EuroLeague team to secure an A license. Oleksy Yefimov, ASM’s general manager, revealed to the Nice newspaper that a video conference meeting should be held this Tuesday to refine the details of the 2025-2026 season.
« As the president (Alexey Fedorychev) says, we’re not here because we were given a favor but because we deserve to belong in this competition, » declared the Ukrainian GM to L’Équipe. Indeed, after participating in two Final Fours in three years, the Roca Team has shown meteoric progress, with Sunday’s final as the culmination. Mike James and his teammates have clearly earned their right to be part of European basketball’s elite in the medium term.
Paris also rewarded?
The video conference meeting should bring other clarifications. Among them: the potential expansion to 20 teams, the location of upcoming Final Fours, and the possible granting of a one-year wild-card to Paris Basketball. Eliminated in the first round of playoffs by champion Fenerbahce, the Parisians were this season’s sensation. Led by a great T.J. Shorts, the capital’s club will need to confirm these results during their second season in the elite.
