AS Monaco delivered when it mattered most, securing a crucial 81-76 victory over ASVEL in their French EuroLeague showdown on Wednesday. The win was essential for Monaco’s playoff hopes, allowing them to reclaim 8th place with only two games left in the regular season.
French guards lead Monaco’s charge
Despite having only eight professional players available, Monaco found heroes in their French backcourt duo. Mathew Strazel delivered a stellar performance with 22 points and 6 assists, while Élie Okobo contributed significantly with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Their combined efforts proved decisive in overcoming the challenge posed by Villeurbanne.
The victory was made even more necessary following Dubai‘s 61-73 win over Zalgiris Kaunas earlier, putting additional pressure on Monaco to secure the result. Even with Mike James back in the lineup, it was the French guards who stepped up to carry the team when it mattered most.

Playoff implications intensify
This triumph puts Monaco within striking distance of a direct playoff berth. The Roca Team now sits just one victory behind Panathinaïkos, who currently occupies the coveted 6th place that guarantees direct qualification for the EuroLeague playoffs.
With their depleted roster showing remarkable resilience, Monaco demonstrated the fighting spirit needed for their playoff push. The team’s ability to perform under pressure, particularly from their French core, will be crucial as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season.
The victory against ASVEL represents more than just three points in the standings – it showcases Monaco’s determination to secure their place among Europe’s elite basketball teams for another postseason run.
