Eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the Spurs (2-4), the Timberwolves have no intention of sitting idle. According to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly is expected to try to revive negotiations with the Bucks to secure a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.

Minnesota Back in the Race for the Greek Freak

This is not the first time the Wolves have pursued this deal. Before last February’s trade deadline, ESPN had already reported that Minnesota was among the teams that had submitted offers to the Bucks. Talks had taken place but went nowhere, with Milwaukee ultimately choosing to keep its superstar. The situation could change this summer: according to Shams Charania, the Wisconsin franchise is now “open to calls and trade offers” regarding Antetokounmpo.

Under contract through 2027, with a player option in 2028, the 31-year-old Greek center appears more ready than ever to move on. Minnesota’s goal is to pair him with Anthony Edwards, in hopes of finally breaking through and reaching the NBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.

Financial and Roster Hurdles to Overcome

While the ambition is clear, the obstacles are significant. The Timberwolves have very little draft capital: only two tradeable first-round picks are available, including the 29th pick in the upcoming draft and a 2033 selection. That is slim currency to convince Milwaukee to part with its best player.

According to Bobby Marks, Jaden McDaniels and one of the two big men — Julius Randle or Naz Reid — would likely need to be included in any trade. Furthermore, Minnesota would need to send out $58.5 million in salaries to stay below the second apron and retain the ability to re-sign Ayo Dosunmu, who is currently an unrestricted free agent. That would force the Wolves to rebuild their roster around Edwards and Antetokounmpo, surrounded by several minimum-salary contracts.

The Bucks will logically take their time reviewing all available offers on the market, aiming to drive up the bidding around their franchise player. Other teams are in the mix, and the competition could complicate Tim Connelly’s task.

After back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances in 2023 and 2024, both ending in defeat, followed by this second-round exit, the Wolves are at a crossroads. Landing the Greek Freak would be a massive gamble — but potentially a decisive one in the pursuit of a championship…
